Bringing a new baby home is such a beautiful, emotional season—and adding a toddler into the mix? That’s where the magic (and a little chaos) happens 🤍
As a San Antonio family photographer, I’ve worked with so many growing families, and I can promise you this: toddler + newborn sessions don’t have to be stressful. With just a little preparation and the right expectations, they can be some of the most meaningful images you’ll ever have.
Here are my favorite tips to help your session feel relaxed and joyful.
Toddlers thrive when they feel seen and important. One of the best things you can do is make them feel like this session is for them too—not just the new baby.
I always make a big deal about how amazing they are, how special their role is, and how lucky their baby sibling is to have them. When toddlers feel like the star, they’re so much more likely to participate willingly (and even proudly!).
Snacks are your secret weapon.
Think easy, small, non-messy options like puffs, mini marshmallows, Cheerios, fruit snacks, or anything they love that won’t stain outfits. A quick snack break can reset the mood instantly and give them the little boost they need to keep going.
Happy toddler = smooth session.
Before you even arrive, talk to your toddler about what’s going to happen.
Keep it simple and positive:
When they know what to expect, everything feels less overwhelming and more like an adventure.
Toddlers love having a job.
Let them know their role is a big deal—whether that’s giving baby kisses, holding their hand, or snuggling close. I’ll guide them gently during the session, but when they feel like they have a purpose, they naturally lean in.
And those little moments? They’re the ones you’ll treasure forever.
You truly can’t overdo it here.
Celebrate the small wins—sitting still for two seconds, giving a hug, even just standing nearby. Encouragement goes a long way in building their confidence and keeping things positive.
As a former Kindergarten teacher, I understand the importance of positive reinforcement and I’ll be cheering them on the whole time right alongside you!
This might be the most important tip of all: let go of perfection.
Toddlers are meant to wiggle. They’re curious, energetic, and sometimes completely uninterested—and that’s okay. Some of the most beautiful images come from those in-between, unplanned moments.
Snuggles that turn into giggles. Little hands reaching out. Big sibling curiosity.
Your session doesn’t need to be perfectly posed to be perfect.
This is a big one—and something I gently remind all of my clients:
Your toddler will mirror you.
If the energy feels rushed, stressed, or tense, they’ll feel it too. But when you stay calm, playful, and relaxed—even if things aren’t going perfectly—it makes such a difference.
If a meltdown happens, that’s okay. We pause, we reset, we give them space, and then we try again.
Some of the sweetest, most genuine moments come after those little resets.
So take a deep breath, trust the process, and know that I’m there to guide you through it all. Your only job is to love on your babies.
I approach every newborn session with patience, flexibility, and a deep understanding of toddlers. Nothing is forced. Everything is gently guided.
Because at the end of the day, this season isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection.
