If you’ve ever thought about booking a family photo session during the summer, you’ve probably had the same concerns as many parents:
“It’s going to be so hot.”
“My kids go to bed early.”
“What if everyone is tired and cranky?”
As a family photographer, I completely understand those concerns. Summer sessions often take place later in the evening and yes, Texas heat is no joke. But despite those challenges, summer family sessions are some of my absolute favorites—and for good reason.
The biggest reason summer sessions happen close to bedtime is simple: the light.
That beautiful, golden glow you see in family photos doesn’t happen in the middle of the day. During the summer, the sun sets later, which means we often start sessions in the evening to capture the soft, dreamy light that makes skin tones look beautiful and creates that magical atmosphere everyone loves.
The tradeoff of a slightly later bedtime often results in some of the most stunning images of the entire year.
One of the biggest surprises for parents is how well their children do during evening sessions.
Many kids actually thrive when they get to run, play, explore, and spend time with their parents outdoors. Rather than asking them to sit still and smile for an hour, family sessions are filled with movement, games, cuddles, and connection.
The excitement of staying up a little later can even make the experience feel special and fun. You can even pack pajamas to change into in the car after the session.
Every season of childhood deserves to be remembered—not just the cooler months.
Summer is full of things that make childhood magical:
Barefoot adventures.
Sun-kissed cheeks.
Long evenings outside.
Extra family time.
Ice cream runs.
Splash pads and backyard memories.
When you look back years from now, you’ll want to remember what your family looked like during these summers together.
This is something I remind parents often: one late bedtime is not going to undo your routines.
Of course, schedules are important. But years from now, your children won’t remember going to bed 45 minutes late. They’ll remember laughing with you, being carried on your dad’s shoulders, running through a field, and spending an evening together.
And you’ll have photographs that bring those memories rushing back.
As photographers, we’re very aware of the summer temperatures.
That’s why we choose locations carefully, schedule sessions later in the evening, keep families moving, and take breaks when needed. I encourage families to bring water and dress comfortably.
The goal is never to make anyone miserable—it’s to create a relaxed experience that results in genuine smiles and beautiful memories.
At the end of the day, family photos are about so much more than perfect weather or perfect schedules.
They’re about preserving a season of life that is constantly changing.
Your children are growing every day. Their little personalities, missing teeth, silly laughs, and tight hugs won’t stay the same forever.
The heat will pass. Bedtime will return to normal the next day.
But the memories we capture together will last a lifetime.
So if you’ve been putting off family photos because it’s hot outside or because the session falls close to bedtime, consider this your encouragement to go for it. Summer may not be perfect, but it’s filled with beautiful moments that deserve to be remembered.
